This elestial smoky quartz skull combines two things you rarely get in one piece: a fully carved shaman-style front and a completely natural elestial back. The carver worked with the shape of the original crystal instead of against it, polishing the face and headdress while leaving the reverse exactly as the stone formed.
The front shows a skull framed by a crown of carved plumes rising from the forehead and sweeping around the head. The smoky quartz is dark and rich in tone, but far from opaque. In sunlight, lighter champagne and honey zones open up through the right side of the face, the nose, and the jaw, and you can follow internal veils and fractures deep into the stone. The polish on the plumes catches the light in long, clean lines, so the piece changes noticeably as you turn it.
Turn it around and you are looking at raw elestial quartz. The back keeps its original skeletal growth surface, layered with fine striations, stepped etchings, and small terminations, including one little clear point sitting in the dark material. Nothing here was polished or reshaped. For collectors who value natural crystal surfaces, this half of the piece is as interesting as the carved half.
Elestial quartz is often described as one of the deeper meditation stones in the quartz family.
